BCU 3 Star Open Canoe
The BCU 3 Star award measures a standard of performance for improving paddlers on open water and moving water, in conditions up to grade 2, journeying as part of a led party. This 2-day training course will focus on the following key areas:
Open canoeing practical skills – flat water foundation skills, trim and balance, coping with wind up to force 3 on open water, crossing eddy lines, ferry gliding; safety and rescue – planning for problem avoidance, safe swimming, throwline use, open canoe rescue, suitable safety equipment; trip planning.

If intending to be assessed for this award, please read carefully the BCU syllabus and our Pre-Course Information sheets before booking a place. You’ll be expected to provide evidence of previous open canoeing experience and have all personal safety equipment for the duration of the course. See the BCU guidance notes for this kit list.
Prior experience: you should have some previous experience of open canoeing – for assessment during the course, minimum recent experience is 3 or more days of open water and river journeys. For training only, you should already be able to canoe consistently on open water in settled conditions. If in any doubt, please contact us for further details.
