The BCU 3 Star award measures a standard of performance for improving paddlers on sea, in conditions up to wind force 3 and associated sea state, journeying as part of a led party. This 2-day training course will focus on the following key areas:

Sea kayaking practical skills – efficient forward paddling, turning in wind and waves, bracing and balancing, paddling up- across- and downwind; safety and rescue – planning for problem avoidance, deep water rescues, towing techniques, safety equipment; trip planning – weather and tidal planning, using maps and charts, simple navigation.

If you are intending to be assessed for this award, please read carefully the BCU syllabus and our Pre-Course Information sheets before booking a place. You’ll be expected to provide evidence of previous sea kayaking experience and have all personal safety equipment for the duration of the course. See the BCU guidance notes for this kit list.

Prior experience: you should have some previous experience of sea kayaking – for assessment during the course, minimum recent experience is 3 or more days’ sea kayaking journeys. For training only, you should already be able to kayak consistently on the sea in settled conditions. If in any doubt, please contact us for further details.

Assessments take place over a single day. If you feel you are at the level, then give us a call to arrange a date.
